So we’re 12 games into the season and as close to 25 per cent of the way through as I could get. It’s been a turbulent time and I doubt anyone could have predicted quite what has happened so far. Yet for all the off-the-field nonsense which has gone on, Grimsby Town are 4th in the Conference and a decent result at Aldershot on Saturday will set things up very nicely for a mouthwatering clash at home to Cambridge on Tuesday evening. So, looking back on the first quarter of the campaign, who has been our best player so far? Perhaps someone no-one would have expected it to be if you would have asked before a ball had been kicked.
Lenell John-Lewis has been fantastic for Town so far this season. A ‘boo boy’ after some unconvincing performances at the end of last season, LJL has been re-born this year. He’s gone from being 4th or 5th choice to the number one striker and one of the first names on the team sheet. His hold up play has been great, bringing others into play and he’s been a menace for most of the defences he has come up against. Although he was isolated in a 4-3-3 (not his fault), ‘The Shop’ has excelled when playing with someone else alongside him. For a big man he’s reasonably quick and very strong and, in winning his fair share of headers, he’s able to knock the ball on for runners trying to get past him. Scott Neilson and Ross Hannah have particularly benefited in the last two home games. Yes, he’s not the best finisher we’ve seen, but his efforts have been noticed and he’s easily been our most improved player. Andy Cook has been unlucky not to get a run in the side, but it would be extremely harsh on John-Lewis after his recent performances.
Only one person voted for Lenell John-Lewis to be Town’s top goalscorer this season in my pre-season survey. Although Liam Hearn currently tops the list with three, LJL is close behind on two. It’s been a great effort and long may it continue. Who do you think has been Town’s best player so far this season?
